The International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) will honor world-renowned physician and researcher Bart
Barlogie, M.D., Ph.D., Director of the Myeloma Institute for Research Therapy (MIRT) at the Arkansas
Cancer Research Center, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). Dr. Barlogie, a professor
of Medicine and Pathology in the UAMS College of Medicine, will receive the 2004 Robert A. Kyle
Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his 20-year career pioneering innovation in multiple
myeloma treatment. During a ceremony on May 8, 2004, the IMF will present the award at the Peabody
Hotel in Little Rock, Arkansas.
One of the world's leading myeloma researchers, Dr. Barlogie has made a tremendous impact on patient
treatment and care. "Not only is Dr. Barlogie an expert in cancer immunology, he is a dedicated physician
and champion in the fight against myeloma," said Susie Novis, IMF President. She continued, "The IMF is
giving this award to recognize his tireless work to significantly improve care, treatment and prognosis for
many myeloma patients."
Due to Dr. Barlogie's efforts in research innovations, MIRT is one of the leading myeloma treatment
centers worldwide. "At the Institute, we treat more patients than any other myeloma facility. It is my
privilege to work with our team to research treatments and develop state-of-the-art therapies for myeloma
patients," said Dr. Barlogie. "I am very honored to accept this award, and I do so on behalf of our team at
the University and in honor of our myeloma patients."
The IMF's Robert A. Kyle Lifetime Achievement Award was established to honor an individual whose
lifetime body of work furthers the ultimate goal of finding a cure for myeloma, a cancer of the bone
marrow. The accolade is named after Dr. Robert A. Kyle, noted physician and founder of the Myeloma
and Related Diseases Research Group at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
