When a friend or family member is diagnosed with cancer, your frst thought is "What can I do??? " At first, everybody offers their sympathy, and asks how they can help. But let's all face it, the biggest gift you can give a cancer patient is a cure. The support of friends, family and the community is vital. Please help us as we increase awareness and funding for research to cure multiple myeloma.
Above is a picture of my mother with her grandchildren. She was diagnosed with multiple myeloma at age 51 in 2005. Because multiple myeloma is a blood cancer, it has a direct and devastating impact on the bones. My mom has multiple lesions throughout her skeletal system that have caused numerous bone fractures. Many fractures have occurred in her spine leaving her unable to lift more than 5 pounds, which could result in paralysis. The average life span for a multiple myeloma patient is 5 years. Clearly we need to add a 0 to the end of that 5.
