The International Myeloma Foundation mourns the passing of our dear friend Cathy Lebkuecher, the wife of Andy Lebkuecher, IMF Regional Director - Support Groups, Southeast, and the leader of the Atlanta Area Multiple Myeloma Support Group. Cathy was instrumental in raising a voice about the need for myeloma support groups; for supporting their growth; and was a fervent supporter of the IMF, our mission, myeloma education, and research. Cathy is also survived by their three children and one grandchild.
"Cathy was a truly remarkable person, she worked tirelessly reaching out to help other patients and their families. She founded the Atlanta Area Multiple Myeloma Support Group and over the years became known as "Dr. Cathy" to those friends she helped. Cathy was awarded the Francesca Thompson Outstanding Service Award in recognition of the work that she did going above and beyond the call of duty to make a difference for others. Cathy was our dear friend, and a champion for myeloma patients everywhere. She leaves behind a legacy and a deep hole in our hearts. Dr. Durie and I extend our deepest sympathy and love to Andy, her children and her sisters."
In her honor, the IMF is establishing the "Cathy Lebkuecher Memorial Fund," whose proceeds will be used to assist support groups in maintaining sustainability and to address the needs they encounter in the face of this devastating disease.
