Monday, November 26th, the IMF's State Patients Equal Access Coalition (SPEAC) held its first meeting with state cancer advocates in Springfield, Illinois to discuss how groups can work together in the coming legislative session to ensure Illinois' state health exchange offers affordable access to comprehensive cancer care.
The Exchange, which is a central part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), will offer uninsured and underinsured Illinois residents a market place to purchase affordable health insurance. Illinois is establishing a partnership with the federal government to implement the exchange and SPEAC advocates will work with state policymakers to guarantee that services critical to cancer patients, such as chemotherapy, hospitals stays, and palliative care are included.
Led by the IMF, Illinois SPEAC members include the American Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, among others.
The coalition will be leading efforts across the country, so stay tuned to see what’s going on in your state!
