Advocates of the Month: Proclamation Club 2013 Myeloma Awareness Month at the IMF was made even more special this year with the help of hundreds of advocates who spread awareness in their communities. From Wasilla to Boca Raton, local officials expressed their support for myeloma patients and the need for a cure. Your effort and outreach touched thousands of people, encouraging new advocates to raise their voices, start support groups, and show all myeloma patients and their loved ones that people in their communities care for them. Therefore, we honor each and every one of you as Advocates of the Month! Read More

Understanding Health Disparities in Cancer: The Case of Multiple Myeloma On Thursday, April 11th, 2013, IMF held a briefing to discuss health disparities in cancer on Capitol Hill. Disparities persist in multiple myeloma (MM), which affects African Americans approximately twice as often as Caucasians and Hispanics. Additionally, African Americans are more likely to succumb to myeloma, even when controlling for factors such as location. In a packed room of Congressional staff and colleagues from other cancer organizations, participants heard from expert speakers on the challenges of reducing and eliminating cancer health disparities for patients with multiple myeloma. Rally for Medical Research The IMF was proud to be among several thousand researchers and patient advocates who gathered in Washington, D.C. on Monday, April 8, to protest federal budget cuts to biomedical research. "This will impact all cancer patients, including myeloma patients," says Meghan Buzby, IMF's Director of U.S. Advocacy. "Without funding for research, we cannot keep moving forward in the fight against cancer." Click here for Meghan's review. |
