Black Swan, Salamanca, and the FDA: A Highly Sensitive New Myeloma Test Debuts

A significant event in the evolution of the IMF's Black Swan Research Initiative® occurred this past weekend in Salamanca, Spain. On March 21-22, the IMF-EuroFlow Workshop focused on a breakthrough in the standardized detection of minimal residual disease (MRD) in myeloma using a new automated and highly sensitive flow cytometry technique. "More than 70 participants from 13 countries gathered to learn the exciting details," writes Dr. Brian Durie, IMF Chairman and Co-Founder, in this week's blog. READ MORE

As a result of the IMF's outreach to US representatives, a House of Representatives resolution was issued today to recognize March 2014 as "National Multiple Myeloma Awareness Month." The IMF worked with Representatives Spencer Bachus (R-AL) and Charles Rangel (D-NY) to introduce this important resolution. Other bipartisan cosponsors include: Rep. Brian Higgins (D-NY), Rep. Mike Honda (D-CA), Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA), Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Rep. Tom Rice (R-SC), and Rep. Eleanor Holmes-Norton (D-DC). During his remarks on the House floor, Rep. Higgins thanked the IMF for our work on behalf of myeloma patients. Watch the video of his remarks HERE. READ MORE

Support Group Member Contributes to Black Swan Research Initiative

Alicia Junghans, RN, a member of the Connecticut Multiple Myeloma Fighters support group, is so impressed with the IMF's commitment to research through the Black Swan Research Initiative that she reached out to the Alumnae Association of the Hartford Hospital School of Nursing, her alma mater, to make a donation to the IMF. This donation will support Black Swan research in finding a cure for myeloma. In addition to the generous contribution Alicia secured for the IMF, she also gifted the Connecticut support group with a stuffed pig named "Hope," who sports a very fashionable IMF sweater, complete with black swan! Thank you to Alicia and all of our members for your generous and creative contributions to support myeloma research.

Bringing the Subject of Myeloma to the Media

In addition to the IMF's national efforts, local support groups that belong to the IMF's network are working overtime to turn attention to myeloma during Myeloma Awareness Month. Support group members have been featured in more than 25 newspaper articles, radio interviews, and television segments, telling people in their communities and beyond about myeloma. Additionally, support group members have secured proclamations declaring March Myeloma Awareness Month in 80 towns, counties, or states throughout the US. Click HERE to see media coverage from Vermont to Florida to North Dakota, and almost everywhere in between. IMF's Nurse Leadership Board to Host Satellite Symposium at International Nursing Meeting
The IMF's Nurse Leadership Board (NLB) will host a satellite symposium May 1st during the Oncology Nursing Society's (ONS) 39th Annual Congress in Anaheim, California. Leading myeloma nurses will discuss the best practices, cutting-edge research, and their own personal experiences with myeloma patients in an exciting and informative presentation. Presenters will discuss therapy combinations, newly approved myeloma drugs, specific cases (such as smoldering versus relapsed/refractory myeloma), and nursing management of patients. This event is one example of the NLB's exceptional work to bring expert myeloma advice to nurses in all communities. Click HERE for the event's agenda and/or to register.
