Matching Resources with Stratified Recommendations for Myeloma Care

Two recent publications highlight the need to adapt myeloma guidelines to accommodate treatment available in different countries and regions of the world. Myeloma treatment guidelines for Asia appear in The Lancet, and those for Latin America appear in the Brazilian Journal of Hematology. Fortunately, writes IMF Chairman Brian Durie, MD in his blog this week, outcomes in those regions are better than we might have anticipated, but there remains a critical need for access to newer agents in clinical trials. IMF Pushes Wisconsin Lawmakers to Pass Oral Chemotherapy Access Legislation

IMF advocate Tom Chellius and National State Affairs Consultant Zina Cary testified this week at a hearing held by the Wisconsin State Senate Insurance & Housing Committee in support of Senate Bill 300 (Cancer Treatment Fairness Act). The bill would require insurers in Wisconsin to cover oral anticancer therapies at rates equal to intravenous, or IV, treatments. Joining the IMF in the packed hearing room were members of the Wisconsin Coalition for Cancer Treatment Access (WCCTA) and the bill's legislative champions, State Senator Alberta Darling and State Representative Pat Strachota. IMF's Nurse Leadership Board Members Review Novel Myeloma Therapies

IMF's Nurse Leadership Board (NLB) members review the use of proteasome inhibitors and immunomodulatory agents (IMiDs) in myeloma treatment in the current issue of the Journal of the Advanced Practitioner in Oncology. "The integration of novel agents into the treatment of multiple myeloma has shifted the focus from an incurable disease to one that is chronic, with a realistic hope of someday achieving a cure," write the article's co-authors, Sandra E. Kurtin, RN, MS, AOCN®, ANP-C, and Elizabeth Bilotti, MSN, RN, APN, OCN®. Publishing this guide supports the NLB's mission to develop broad recommendations for myeloma care. READ MORE



Exhibit and Sale of Art Works to Benefit IMF
On Saturday, November 9th from 3 pm to 8 pm, an exhibit and sale entitled Modern Art against Myeloma will be held in Williamsport, PA to benefit the International Myeloma Foundation (IMF). Lithographic works by Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, André Masson, Henri Matise, Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, Abraham Rattner and Marc Chagall will be featured at the event, which is free and open to the public.
