IMWG Researcher Herve Avet-Loiseau Shows That High-Risk Chromosome (FISH) Data Enhance The Value of ISS Staging
In the largest collaborative International Myeloma Working Group (IMWG) study to date, chromosome FISH data were combined with ISS staging information to develop a new and improved classification system for myeloma patients at diagnosis. Two especially interesting points are that: 1) Low ISS stage to some extent counteracts the negative prognostic impact of t(4;14) and (17)p-chromosome changes; and 2) Autologous stem cell transplant can improve outcome for some poor-risk patients. In the News: What Can Be Done About the High Cost of Cancer Drugs?

In addition, IMWG and IMF Board Member, Dr. Vincent Rajkumar from the Mayo Clinic, just co-authored an article in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings reviewing what can be done about the high cost of cancer drugs (including drugs for myeloma). Key points of interest and importance are the need for more precise treatment guidelines, establishing rules for drugs which fulfill areas of unmet need (such as in myeloma) and better ways to handle drugs when they become generic “off patent.” Interesting reading and just the beginning of an evolving story!
