Did You Know?

... that IMF member Benson Klein has found a solution to the annoying post-transplant skin irritation?

The solution is a lotion! After trying numerous oral and topical remedies, Benson Klein discovered that “Acid Mantle Skin Acidifier” really helps. This soothing moisturizing cream promotes a healing environment by restoring and maintaining the protective acidity of the skin. Up to now physicians had not realized that skin acidity was affected in post-transplant patients. The improvement in the skin irritation with the use of “Acid Mantle Skin Acidifier” has been amazing – certainly worth a try if you have this problem. Manufactured by Doak Dermatologics, a subsidiary of Bradley Pharmaceuticals Inc., this cream is available from pharmacies upon request.

... that there is a new product on the market which has been found effective by some of our members with low white counts, those especially susceptible to infection?

The “Air SupplyTM” is a personal air purifier designed to effectively eliminate particles such as bacteria, viruses and allergens from the air. It’s about the size of a cigarette pack and is worn around the neck .

It runs on a 9v battery. Clinical testing has shown 95% reduction in bacteria. The impact of regular use in different patient groups such as myeloma remains to be established. However, this is something to consider especially if flying or in crowded places. The “Air SupplyTM” is manufactured by Wein Products, Inc. of Los Angeles, CA and distributed by Breathe Free Products (888) 434-8313.

... that the technology of Bence Jones Protein Test is still often used but the actual test is not?

A doctor will often order a “urine for Bence Jones testing”, however, the test which the lab does is not the old heating-cooling crude precipitation test but:

  • Total protein measurement over 24 hours (e.g. 1gm/24hrs);
  • Urine protein electrophoresis (UPEP) to see if a spike is there (e.g. 30% is a spike);
  • Immunofixation to see if spike is kappa or lambda (e.g. 300mg of kappa/24 hours).
