Myeloma Minute: Special Edition - the IMF in Milan!

This special edition of the Myeloma Minute comes to you from Milan, Italy, where the IMF's International Myeloma Working Group (IMWG) convened this week on the eve of the 19th Annual Congress of the European Hematology Association (EHA).
IMWG Summit - Live from Milan

The 5th Annual International Myeloma Working Group (IMWG) Summit was held in Milan, Italy this week, drawing a record number of myeloma researchers from around the world. Presentations of the latest myeloma data on topics such as new diagnostic criteria, advances in flow technology, and geriatric risk stratification were followed by energetic question and answer sessions between audience members and panelists. During intimate breakout discussions, myeloma specialists debated new ideas in depth and identified which ideas merited future study.

On June 26th, IMF Chairman Dr. Brian Durie will present a teleconference summarizing the myeloma news from the IMWG Summit, as well as news from the recent annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in Chicago, and the annual congress of the EHA. Archived Tweets from #IMWG14 can be found HERE.
Antonio Palumbo Honored with the 2014 Robert A. Kyle Lifetime Achievement Award

Dr. Antonio Palumbo, Chief of the Myeloma Unit of the Department of Oncology, Division of Hematology at the University of Torino in Torino, Italy, was honored with the IMF's 12th Annual Robert A. Kyle Lifetime Achievement Award on June 10th. The award is given each year in recognition of outstanding work in the field of multiple myeloma. "Congratulations and thank you for your commitment to patients," said Susie Novis, IMF President. "Your leadership, innovation, and research have made a difference in the lives of patients and their families."

The gala dinner was held at Milan's Museo Nazionale Scienza e Tecnologia, Leonardo Da Vinci. Dr. Vincent Rajkumar lauded Dr. Palumbo for leading "important trials that have yielded incredible information." On receiving the award from its namesake, Dr. Robert Kyle, Dr. Palumbo noted that "less than 14 years ago, the median survival for myeloma was 29 months. Now we are projecting median survival of 7-10 years – triple the survival in 15 years!" No other cancer has seen that kind of progress, he said, adding that he would share the prize with his hard-working team.
