The IMF continued its outreach to myeloma patients around the world by co-sponsoring a patient meeting in Bari, Italy, along with the Italian blood cancer patient group AIL Pazienti (Associazione Italiana contro le Leucemie, Linfomi e Mieloma).

On May 17th, the IMF’s Director of Europe and the Middle East, Nadia Elkebir, attended the meeting and presented on behalf of the IMF to the more than 200 myeloma patients in attendance. Nadia delivered her presentation in Italian, telling attendees about the resources and support the IMF provides to patients worldwide.

More than 200 patients attended the meeting.
Maria-Rita Grattarola and Paola Angaroni of AIL Pazienti played key roles in organizing the meeting.  Among the highlights were presentations from physicians Dr. Nicola Di Rienzo and IMF Board of Directors member Dr. Mario Boccadoro, recipient of the IMF’s 2008 Robert A. Kyle Lifetime Achievement Award for his compassion to myeloma patients and dedication to their treatment.

A unique feature of this meeting was a roundtable discussion with an osteopath, a psychologist, and a nephrologist, a full team of healthcare providers who discussed problems that myeloma patients may encounter and offered solutions.

“The roundtable with health specialists was an excellent addition to the meeting program, as it was enlightening for the participants to hear and be able to ask about the wide range of health issues related to myeloma,” said Nadia.

IMF brochures translated in Italian were featured on the registration table

Nadia also enjoyed speaking with Giuseppina Belli D' Elia, who at age 80, is devoted to supporting myeloma patients and serves as the president of the Bari chapter of AIL Pazienti. AIL Pazienti has 82 local chapters throughout Italy.

Nadia looks forward to continuing to expand the IMF’s relationship with AIL Pazienti to provide the best resources to myeloma patients throughout Italy.
