Preview: 2012 American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting
Dr. Brian G.M. Durie, Chairman and Co-founder of the IMF, provides a preview of the myeloma news he expects to be most interesting at the 2012 American Society of Hematology (ASH) Annual Meeting. Over 700 myeloma related abstracts will be presented at this year’s meeting, being held December 8-11 in Atlanta, GA. Dr. Durie provides highlights for each of the four major groups of myeloma abstracts: new drug trials; frontline options; biology and molecular genetics; and myelodysplastic syndrome prior to the onset of myeloma and myeloma treatment. Secrets of Long Life: Are Cookies Okay After All?
In his ongoing examination of the relationship between good health and good food, Dr. Brian G.M. Durie, Chairman and Co-founder of the IMF, discovers that a long and healthy life CAN include cookies. (Perhaps just not the processed variety.) “It turns out that ‘papassini,’ Sardinian cookies made with raisins, almonds, and jam from cooked red wine (saba), are very popular, especially at festivals and during holiday seasons,” Dr. Durie writes in his blog this week. “So right before Thanksgiving and the Christmas/New Year season, I learn that cookies may be okay after all!” READ MORE

The IMF Reaches Out to the Turkish Myeloma Community on a Bridge-Building Visit
The IMF visited Ankara and Istanbul last month during what was a wonderful bridge-building experience with the Turkish myeloma community. Dr. Meral Beksaç of Ankara University and Dr. Rafael Fonseca of the Mayo Clinic in Arizona made presentations and participated in lively Q&As. READ MORE

Stillwater, Minn. Myeloma Support Group Marks 'Centennial' Anniversary
Barb Davis and Karl Vollstedt, co-leaders of the Stillwater, Minnesota Multiple Myeloma Support Group, will host their group’s centennial meeting celebration in December. The group began in Karl's home with the help of his wife Lorraine in September 2004, with 11 patients and caregivers. Today, it has more than 70 patients and caregivers. READ MORE
