Win a Social Media Scholarship

The Mayo Clinic Center for Social Media is offering an opportunity for patient advocates to attend its Social Media Summit Oct. 15-19, 2012, in Rochester, Minn. through its second annual scholarship contest for patients and caregivers. “Medical professionals typically have training and travel budgets to cover the costs of conference participation, while patients don’t,” says Farris Timimi, M.D., the center’s medical director. Coalition for Cancer Drug Coverage Parity Converges in Washington D.C.
Last week, the Patients Equal Access Coalition (PEAC) headed to The Hill in Washington, D.C. to support the Cancer Drug Coverage Parity Act (HR 2746) introduced by Representative Brian Higgins (D-NY 27th). The IMF and volunteers from seven other PEAC member organizations held nearly 30 meetings with representatives and senators to encourage support of our efforts in improving insurance coverage for oral chemotherapy. Many thanks to the more than 100 activists from across the country who participated, contacting nearly 100 different legislators by phone or email. READ MORE
Paris Patient and Family Seminar C'est Magnifique
The IMF was proud to once again collaborate with AF3M the French myeloma Support Group, on the annual Paris Patient & Family Seminar. This seminar was the 10th seminar we’ve held in Paris, certainly a milestone for this long-standing program that brings the latest information on the advances being made in the treatment for myeloma to patients and their families. This year the seminar was held at the Hotel d’Aubusson, where approximately 100 attendees were present for a full day of presentations followed by questions and discussions (and a much-appreciated lunch in the middle of the day). The IMF is extremely grateful to the continued collaboration and support from the French myeloma experts—Prof. Philippe Moreau, Prof. Thierry Facon and Prof. J. P. Fermand — who were able to participate, providing insightful presentations and quite lively discussions. The IMF extends a heartfelt thank you to all who participated, especially to the Board and Members of AF3M, who made the seminar possible, and the wonderful collaborative efforts of the faculty. A special thank you to Nadia Elkebir for her help in organizing and overseeing the meeting. We look forward to seeing you all again next year.
What Happens in Boca, Doesn’t Stay in Boca: From Educational Videos to Emotional Highs
Watch our posted videos of presentations made by—among others—Dr. Asher Chanan-Khan of the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Kenneth C. Anderson of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the IMF’s Dr. Brian G.M. Durie at 2012’s Boca Raton Patient & Family Seminar. Dr. Durie captured the seminar’s emotional highlight in this blog post about the first annual Bob Feltzin Award for Outstanding Service to the myeloma community—which was awarded to Bob’s widow, Cindy.
A Patient’s Blog: When Sour Stomach and Nausea Linger
“In between waves of nausea and an assault by any number of medications, it’s no surprise that a myeloma patient’s stomach can feel out-of-whack and need attention,” writes blogger Pat Killingsworth. “So what we do to help get our chronic nausea and/or sour stomach symptoms under control?” READ MORE
