Professor Jesús San-Miguel recipient of 10th Robert A. Kyle Lifetime Achievement Award

Prof. Jesús San-Miguel is Professor of Medicine (Haematology), head of the Haematology Department at the University Hospital of Salamanca, and Director of the Biomedical Research Institute of Salamanca, Spain.

He studied medicine at the University of Navarra, Spain and completed his residency in Haematology/Internal Medicine at the University Hospital of Salamanca. In 1980, after obtaining his PhD, he undertook a post-doctoral fellowship at the Leukaemia Unit of Hammersmith Hospital, Royal Postgraduate Medical School, London, UK.

Prof. San Miguel is a member of the Advisory Board of the International Myeloma Foundation, the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, Carreras Foundation and a board member of the Spanish Hematology and Genome Foundations. He is member of the editorial board of several scientific journals, and he was Associated Editor of Haematologica. He has served as Vice Director of the Cancer Research Center, Salamanca, Spain, and as Chairman of the Spanish Myeloma Group (GEM) as well as the European Association as Board Councillor and Chairman of the Scientific Committee for the 9th congress (2004) and President for the 15th EHA Congress.

He organized the IXth International Myeloma Workshop held in Salamanca (2003). He has received numerous prizes including the Waldenström Award in 2007 and the Spanish prizes on both Oncology and Translational Research. He has published over 500 original papers in international journals. His areas of interest include multiple myeloma, the biology of leukaemic cells and their prognostic implications, and minimal residual disease.

Prof. San-Miguel is the tenth recipient of the Robert A. Kyle Lifetime Achievement Award, which will be presented in Amsterdam on June 12, 2012.
