Difference Made in New York by Nurse Leadership Board Member

On June 1, 2011 Kena Miller, RN, MSN, FNP at Roswell Park Cancer Institute and member of the IMF Nurse Leadership Board traveled to Albany, New York to meet with multiple state Senators and Representatives on behalf of oral chemotherapy access legislation.

The bill, S.3988 / A.6233, would require health insurers to cover oral anticancer medications on a basis no less favorable than intravenous or injected anticancer medications.

Kena participated in ten meetings where she emphasized the importance of the passage of the bill for her patients. She informed each member that myeloma patients have a limited number of effective therapies available as is. By not covering oral chemotherapy at the same rate as IV chemotherapy, patients are left with even fewer options.

In each meeting, Kena explained how detrimental the current insurance system is for myeloma patients and urged each member to support and vote in favor of S.3988 / A.6233.

We are happy to report that the bill has been placed on the Governor’s desk for signing!

The IMF Nurse Leadership Board (NLB) is made up of nurses from the leading centers treating myeloma patients in the US. Their mission is to develop broad recommendations for nursing care for myeloma patients.

Congratulations and THANK YOU to Kena for being the August Advocate of the Month!
