Dr. Bergsagel is Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto and a consultant at the Ontario Cancer Institute/Princess Margaret Hospital, also in Toronto. He received his medical degree from the University of Manitoba Medical College.
Dr. Bergsagel has held prominent appointments with many organizations involved in the development of modern cancer therapies, including the American Society of Hematology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Association for Cancer Research, the Canadian Society for Hematology, the Canadian Oncology Society, the International Society of Hematology, and the International Union Against Cancer (UICC). In 1989 he was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada for his services to Canadian and international medicine. In the same year he was made the first recipient of the Waldenström Award for myeloma research.
Dr. Bergsagel has served on the Investigational New Drug Committee, Clinical Trials Group of the National Cancer Institute of Canada as a member of the Specialty Committee on Medical Oncology of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and Chairman of the Medical Review Committee of the Gairdner Foundation. He is a widely published author having contributed extensively to the original and review literature on hematologic malignancies. He is a former Associate Editor of the Journal of Clinical Oncology and a member of the editorial boards of Medical and Pediatric Oncology, Cancer Chemotherapy and Pharmacology, and Blood.
