Flawed Approach to Assessing Value of Myeloma Treatment Puts Patients at Risk

From the American Society of Clinical Oncology to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, a growing number of institutions are attempting to assess the cost-effectiveness of myeloma treatments. In his blog this week, IMF Chairman Dr. Brian Durie responds to the hue and cry over the latest such effort, a report entitled “Treatment Options for Relapsed or Refractory Multiple Myeloma.” Its pricing recommendations, writes Dr. Durie, have “serious implications and serious flaws.” To read Dr. Durie’s blog, click HERE.

Everybody Loved Doris

The IMF is deeply saddened by the passing of Doris Roberts on April 18, 2016. An Emmy-Award-winning actress who starred in the classic sitcom “Everybody Loves Raymond,” Doris was an ardent supporter of Peter Boyle Memorial Fund. She generously delivered hilarious performances at the IMF’s Annual Comedy Benefit since 2007. IMF Board Member Loraine Boyle, wife of the late actor, said, “Doris was more to us than Peter's TV wife. She helped get us through the loss of Peter with her love, her warmth and her compassion.  She followed through with her support of the IMF's annual comedy benefit in support of the Peter Boyle Memorial Research Fund year after year.  We will miss her energy and dedication. Doris Roberts was a true friend and a great actress.” To see photos of Doris Roberts at the IMF Comedy Celebration through the years, please click HERE.

IMF Board Member Dr. Edith Mitchell Appointed to Cancer Moonshot Advisory Panel

The IMF congratulates Board Member Dr. Edith Mitchell on her appointment as a scientific advisor on Vice President Joe Biden’s Cancer Moonshot Initiative. Dr. Mitchell is a Professor of Medical Oncology and a researcher at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University, where she also serves as Director of the Center to Eliminate Cancer Disparities and Associate Director for Diversity Affairs. “Minorities, especially African Americans, suffer a disproportionate share of the burden of cancer in the United States, with higher incidence rates and poorer survival when compared to other racial and ethnic populations,” she said. “Therefore, the Moonshot Initiative may define prevention, diagnostic, and interventional strategies leading to cancer healthcare equity.” We wish Dr. Mitchell well on this important effort!
