IMF's Black Swan Research Initiative Makes Inroads on Pathway to a Cure

The Black Swan Research Initiative® is moving ahead on all fronts, reports IMF Chairman Dr. Brian Durie in his blog this week. “The stage is set to include standardized MRD testing into clinical trials. And we continue to work on additional and simpler testing, such as a new blood test for early diagnosis and monitoring.” Also this week, a follow-up on possible connections between sitting too much and myeloma—but not what you’d expect! FDA Finalizes Drug Shortage Rule

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced its final rule on drug shortages as part of the Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act (FDASIA). The rule has been introduced in response to the alarming number of drug shortages. An article in Helio Hematology/Oncology Today reported that as of mid-January, over 230 drugs were listed on the drug shortage list of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. The new rule will require the FDA to keep a current list of drugs that are in shortage in the US, as well as require certain types of notifications six months in advance of anticipated shortages or manufacturing discontinuances to raise public and patient/physician awareness of the issue. The new rule will go into effect September 8, 2015. To read the full story click HERE.

The 3rd Annual Miracles For Myeloma 5K Announced

The 3rd Annual Miracles For Myeloma 5K run/walk will take place on Saturday, September 26, 2015 at Oak Ridge Park in Clark, NJ. Last year’s second annual event was a big success, with more than $125,000 raised to support the research and resources of the IMF’s search to cure multiple myeloma. The event will also feature “A Remembrance Path,” where participants and spectators can walk a pathway marked by maroon and white balloons tied to placards, each honoring a loved one who has been diagnosed and is living with myeloma or in special remembrance of those who have passed. To donate, create a balloon and placard for the remembrance walk or to sign up for the race, please visit the Miracles for Myeloma event page, HERE.
