The International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) Announces Another Successful Myeloma Awareness Month (#MAM)
The IMF launched March as “Myeloma Awareness Month” in 2009. Fueled by the organization’s key message that “knowledge is power,” the IMF this year spread information about the disease through local community events, social media campaigns, story sharing, and official proclamations. Advocates across 28 states, cities, and counties obtained proclamations, and Representative Brian Higgins (D-NY) introduced a federal resolution to recognize March 2015 as “National Multiple Myeloma Awareness Month.”

North Hollywood, CA, March 31, 2015 – The International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) – improving the quality of life of myeloma patients while working toward prevention and a cure – is proud to announce another successful “Myeloma Awareness Month” (#MAM) during March 2015.

The IMF launched March as “Myeloma Awareness Month” in 2009. Fueled by the organization’s key message that “knowledge is power,” the IMF this year spread information about the disease through local community events, social media campaigns, story sharing, and official proclamations. Advocates across 28 states, cities, and counties obtained proclamations, and Representative Brian Higgins (D-NY) introduced a federal resolution to recognize March 2015 as “National Multiple Myeloma Awareness Month.”

“It is so important for myeloma patients and caregivers to share their stories not only with their families, friends, and local communities, but also with the online community, which allows them to reach and inspire thousands,” said Robin Tuohy, IMF Senior Director of Support Groups at the IMF.

Myeloma Awareness Month kicked-off with the annual Boca Raton Patient & Family Seminar. Some additional highlights of 2015 initiative included two Regional Community Workshops (RCW) hosted by the IMF (in Denver, Colorado and San Diego, California); a “Living Well with Myeloma” teleconference hosted by IMF Chairman Dr. Brian Durie on “Understanding the Immune System in Myeloma,” which drew more than 650 live participants (replay available at http://www.immunesystem.myeloma.org); the launch of “Myeloma Voices: An IMF Audio Archive,”  featuring patient and caregiver interviews by oral historian Ryan White; St. Patrick’s Day Parade and marathon “marches” for myeloma; and concluded with the IMF San Francisco Patient & Family Seminar (PFS).

On social media, the #MAM hashtag averaged 2,800 unique and 6,000 combined Tweets and Re-Tweets. The patient-driven #MamboforMyeloma campaign prompted people across the country to get off their feet and dance for the cause. Takeda Oncology even pledged to donate $5 to the IMF for each use of the #DiscoverMyeloma hashtag within the month of March.

“I am extremely proud to see patient advocates from all over the country get involved in Myeloma Awareness Month in so many unique and creative ways this year,” Tuohy said.
