Lowering the Cost of Cancer Drugs

The IMF this week joins in the discussion about the high cost of cancer drugs after the recent article in Mayo Clinic Proceedings about steps that can be taken to lower these costs. In this week’s blog, IMF Chairman Dr. Brian Durie cites challenges in the plan laid out in Proceedings. He also presents some alternative ideas of his own as to how best to get affordable drugs into the hands of the patients that need them. CLICK HERE to read Dr. Durie’s blog.

IMF Introduces Myeloma Voices: An Audio Archive

The IMF debuts a new way for patients and their loved ones to share their myeloma stories with “Myeloma Voices: An IMF Audio Archive.” Launched at the Boca Raton Patient & Family Seminar, the archive features oral historian Ryan White interviewing a dozen participants about their myeloma journeys. The archives are in line with IMF’s position that “knowledge is power” and are designed as an ongoing way of heightening awareness of the disease. “I was struck by the grace, humility and strength of character displayed in all the interviewees’ stories,” White said. “They’ve all had their share of difficult times, balanced by acts of generosity and caring, and humor.” CLICK HERE to listen to the patients’ stories.

Peninsula Employees Run LA Marathon for IMF

Seven employees of LA’s Peninsula Hotel, including Executive Assistant Manager Scott Berger, ran the LA Marathon on Sunday, March 15, clad in special “March Against Myeloma” tee shirts. The group raised money to combat myeloma while racing. IMF Board of Directors member Loraine Boyle, who lost her husband, the actor Peter Boyle, to myeloma in 2006, is a frequent guest of the Peninsula Hotel, and the runners wanted to connect with her charitable efforts. “It is so important to spread further awareness about this disease,” Berger said. “This was the first fundraiser we did for the IMF, but we hope to grow our partnership!”

Connecticut Proclaims March "Myeloma Awareness Month"

Myeloma Awareness month is in full swing, and Connecticut is the latest state to issue a proclamation stating so. Senior Director of Support Groups at the IMF, Robin Tuohy, along with her husband, Michael, obtained the proclamation, as well as one from their town of Prospect. Support group member Brian Denyer received one for his town of Naugatuck, as well. “I am very proud of all support groups who are involved in having their towns and states declare March as Myeloma Awareness Month,” Robin said. “Increased awareness can lead to earlier diagnosis, better treatment options and outcomes, and increased research funding, which someday will lead to a cure!”
