IMF Chairs Tokyo Flow Workshop

Next Generation Flow Cytometry made its debut in Japan last weekend at a Tokyo workshop hosted by the IMF. NGF was developed with the support of the IMF’s signature Black Swan Research Initiative® and is a crucial step on a pathway to a cure. Previously, the key efforts among Japanese researchers have focused on Next Generation Sequencing, but IMF Chairman Dr. Brian Durie and others demonstrated how NGF represents a vast improvement in disease detection. Mambo for Myeloma this Month!

Now that it’s Myeloma Awareness Month (#MAM), don’t forget about the #MamboforMyeloma initiative. #MamboForMyeloma asks patients, caregivers, doctors, friends, family members and groups to film themselves dancing and share a donation link for the cause. You don’t have to be an amazing dancer – it’s the spirit of the endeavor that matters. Through #MamboforMyeloma, myeloma patients will have the power to be seen and heard, and to initiate change by sharing their stories and bringing communities together to fight for a cure. Profiles in Courage: Patients Share Their Myeloma Stories

This week’s shared myeloma story comes from Elfi Jirsa of Austria, diagnosed in 1989. She originally went to her doctor to check her cholesterol level, but additional testing led to her doctor’s detection of myeloma. In the ensuing quarter century, Elfi became increasingly involved with patient and advocacy groups and finally became Vice-President of the Austrian Multiple Myeloma Association. Her motto: “I am healthy as a principle, and I believe in the power of a smile and positive thinking.” Elfi’s story reminds us that a story shared with one person can help spread awareness, but a story shared online can reach thousands. South Dakota Joins the March to Oral Parity!

South Dakota bill SB 101 unanimously passed out of the House last Thursday, providing another decisive victory in the IMF’s state-based oral parity campaign. Since SB 101 has now passed through both House chambers, it will next move to the Governor, where it is likely to be signed into law within the next two weeks. Despite strong pushback from the opposition, a coalition of advocacy organizations, industry partners and patient advocates successfully demonstrated to legislators the importance of this critical issue. As a result, thousands of patients will have access to medications they so desperately need. Congratulations to South Dakota for this tremendous success!

Visit IMF's 'Veterans Against Myeloma' Website for News and Resources

The IMF has long been a resource for information about myeloma for all patients, but veterans are often in need of additional news and resources. Our Veterans Against Myeloma (VAM) website is set up to provide links to assistance programs, national service organizations and Veterans Administration information all in one place. In addition, VAM email alerts notify interested readers about breaking news and articles of interest. If you are a veteran with myeloma, or if you know of one, CLICK HERE to visit the site.
