2nd Annual Miracles for Myeloma 5K Raises More Than $110,000 for the IMF

The 2nd Annual Miracles for Myeloma 5K Run/Walk held last weekend in Clark, New Jersey drew over 700 participants and raised more than $110,000 for the IMF! While the race clocked times and named winners, the real goals were to raise awareness of myeloma and raise money for research leading to a cure. The IMF extends a big THANK YOU to event founders and organizers Ron Pask, Sheree Pask, and Gina Klemm, and to all of the participants from New Jersey and beyond! Transplant's Role in Newly Diagnosed Myeloma Debated

"Transplant remains an important treatment option that results in remissions of many years for a subset of myeloma patients,” notes IMF Chairman Dr. Brian Durie. But the role of stem cell transplants in newly diagnosed patients was the subject of a recent debate held during the National Comprehensive Cancer Network's Annual Congress on Hematologic Malignancies. Dr. Sergio Giralt of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center defended the “pro” position, while Dr. Kenneth Anderson of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute took the “con” position. Look for our interview with Dr. Giralt on salvage transplant in the fall issue of Myeloma Today. CLICK HERE to read a report from Oncology Times.

Should Myeloma Patients Get a Flu Shot?

The beginning of fall also signals the beginning of flu season, so now is the time to get your flu vaccine. The IMF recommends annual flu shots for all myeloma patients. CLICK HERE for specific recommendations for patients who have undergone a stem cell transplant and those who may benefit from a high-dose flu vaccine. As always, we recommend you discuss your individual situation with your doctor.
