Earlier this Fall, Elliot Recht and Joanna Jones, Leader and Co-Leader of the San Diego Multiple Myeloma Support Group, met with two California Representatives to discuss general healthcare issues and the importance of HR 2746, the Cancer Coverage Parity Act of 2011.
Prior to their meetings, the IMF advocacy team provided them with talking points on the issue and materials to leave with the Representatives.
The pair first met with Joanna’s Representative Susan Davis, whom she requested a meeting with during a neighborhood town hall meeting.
“I've live in the district of U.S. Rep. Susan Davis for 11 years,” said Joanna. “She has supported cancer research funding in the past and she also voted for the Affordable Healthcare Act in 2010.”
Joanna, Elliot and two others met with Rep. Davis in her office in San Diego. The pair thanked her for her past cancer research support and encouraged her to support HR 2746, the Cancer Coverage Parity Act. Previously unaware of HR 2746, Joanna and Elliot took time to fully explain the background on the issue and what the bill will do to solve it.
Elliot explained, “Patients with multiple myeloma, leukemia, breast and other forms of cancer are affected by the cost disparity of oral and IV chemotherapy as they often have to forgo oral chemotherapy because of excessive out-of-pocket costs. This bill ensures that IF a health plan covers intravenous chemotherapy, they must also cover oral chemotherapy at the same reimbursement rate.”
Elliot and Joanna emphasized the same talking points in their second meeting with Dawn Alden, an aid for Representative Duncan Hunter.
“Both of the Representatives offered help to constituents with health care issues, such as applying for Medicare, other health insurance coverage issues and financial assistance.”
Elliot and Joanna plan to follow up with both Representatives regarding co-sponsorship of HR 2746.
THANK YOU and congratulations to Elliot and Joanna for their hard work and for being Advocates of the Month for December!
