Dr. Oken is Medical Director of the Hubert H. Humphrey Cancer Center in Robbinsdale, Minnesota and Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical School.
Dr. Oken was born in Penn Yan, New York and lived in Rochester, New York until entering university. He received his undergraduate education and B.S. degree from the University of Michigan and his MD degree from Duke University School of Medicine. He completed residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of Rochester and at New York University. Dr. Oken completed his Hematology Fellowship at the University of Rochester and is Board Certified in Medical Oncology, Hematology and Internal Medicine.
Dr. Oken served in the U.S. Army as Chief of Hematology/Oncology at the William Beaumont General Hospital in El Paso, Texas. For 18 years he was Staff Physician at the Minneapolis, VA Medical Center and faculty member at the University of Minnesota where he was professor of Medicine.
Dr. Oken is past Chairman of the Hematology, Myeloma and Lymphoma Committees of the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group and Member of the steering Committee for the PLCO (Prostate, Lung, Colon and Ovary Screening Project). He has published numerous scientific and clinical articles, abstracts and book chapters and currently serves on the Editorial Board of Leukemia and Lymphoma.
