Congress Should Guarantee Affordable Health Care for All U.S. Residents by 2012, Protect from High Out-of-Pocket Costs, Panel Says
The 2003 Medicare law included a provision for the creation of the panel -- the Citizens' Health Care Working Group -- whose 15 members include HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt and representatives for consumers, the disabled, business, organized labor and health care providers. The panel said Congress should create an independent "public-private entity" to define a basic set of benefits and services, which by 2012 should be made available at an affordable cost to all U.S. residents. The panel also recommended prioritization of efforts to improve health care quality and efficiency and said that end-of-life care should be restructured to offer increased access and more choices. Report from the 4th Annual Paris Patient & Family Seminar
On Friday, September 8th, the IMF held it's 4th annual Patient & Family Seminar in Paris, France. Prof. Jean Luc Harousseau, chaired the seminar and we returned once again to the beautiful venue, Maison de l'Amerique Latine. For the 4th time, Morgane Yvon organized the meeting, and was very successful in advertising the meeting. She even secured a seminar announcement appeared in Pleine Vie, a well known magazine dedicated to health issues. Over 140 people attended the full day seminar, and for the second year in a row the seminar was interactive, with the audience response system that provided valuable information about current treatment trends in France.

The National Oncologic PET Registry (NOPR) opened May 8th to ensure access to Medicare reimbursement for certain types of positron emission tomography (PET) scans. You may recall Dr. Durie's statement in February of last year: "[The IMF has] worked hard for reimbursement because we believe PET scanning is an important tool for diagnostic evaluation, staging, and monitoring for myeloma. This is a very encouraging decision by Medicare, and an important step forward for myeloma patients."
