Sydney 2005:
Epigenetic Changes in the Molecular Pathology of Multiple Myeloma
By Johannes Drach, MD
Dr. Drach reviewed the epigenetic changes in the molecular pathology of MM. Methylation of specific regions of genes blocks tumor suppression genes in some cancers. By comparing the methylation profile of MGUS and MM genes, Drach and colleagues were able to identify genes that were associated with MM. They report that the development of MM is stimulated by multiple genetic abnormalities and that methylation may be a signal of an early event or of disease progression.
